Superhero Movie Countdown - No. 5

Today's superhero movie is the story of a team coming together.

No. 5 - The Avengers (2012)
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hiddleston
Director: Joss Whedon
Quote: "The Avengers. That's what we call ourselves; we're sort of like a team. "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" type thing." - Tony Stark
About: When Marvel began it's "Avengers" plan in 2008, it seemed more like a wish dream than a reality. How would it work? Could it work? Who would bring all these pieces together into a whole? The answer was yes, yes, and Joss Whedon. He was the right person to craft the Avengers world and to make the first film. We might quibble about the followup, and Whedon certainly got burned out by the weight of keeping a mammoth universe going, but you can't forget how good "The Avengers" was when it debuted, and how important it is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's not the best of the Marvel films (as you'll see next week), but it might be the most important. It was fun, funny, and action-packed. It's not a perfect movie, but it definitely lived up to the hype and the weight of expectations.
Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference.
