Superhero Movie Countdown - No. 6

Today I continue my superhero movie countdown with one that might be the most unexpected on this list.

No. 6 - Superman Returns (2006)
Starring: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, and Kate Bosworth
Director: Bryan Singer
Quote: "Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son." - Jor-El
About: By most metrics, "Superman Returns" was a bust. It was supposed to jump start the Superman franchise again, but instead it failed to earn  big Box Office returns. It would be another seven years before they tried to jump start the Superman franchise again. But, for me, "Superman Returns" was pitch perfect. It takes place directly after the events of "Superman II," pretending the events of "Superman III" and "Superman IV" never happened. Most fans like it that way. Singer, a huge fan of Richard Donner's work on the original, wanted something faithful to that spirit. And he created that, albeit with an entirely new cast. I am also moved by meditations on faith woven into the story. Of course, the theology is warped, but that's not entirely unexpected. Superman is the most deistic of all superheros, and it's been that way since it was created in 1932. This is a film that explores that in a rich and fascinating way. Others might disagree, but this has always been one of my favorite superhero movies.
Rating: PG-13 for some intense action violence.
